The Art Gallery of Calgary
(formerly the Muttart Public Art Gallery)

is proud to present their Premiere Exhibition:

Through the Eyes of the Bear
March 2-April 15,2000

Artist: Maureen Enns
Curator: Ewa Sniatycka
Gala Opening: Thursday March 2 from 6-10pm

Maureen Enns, an artist from Alberta, of international renown, has made a significant impact on contemporary art in Canada. She has successfully integrated the worlds of art and science to highlight ecological sensibilities. Issues of wildlife management and conservation influence her work which has taken her around the world from camel trekking in the Australian Outback to the grizzlies of Kamchatka, Russia.

Through the Eyes of the Bear is an interdisciplinary, collaborative exhibition that challenges notions of the nature of the grizzly while addressing issues of conservation and management of the few remaining wild places on the planet. It stems from the ongoing research and experiences of Maureen Enns and her partner Charles Russell. They have lived in close association with 3 orphaned grizzly cubs in Kamchatka, as extremely remote area of eastern Russia.

The exhibition consists of 6 modules that include a selection of two dimensional works. These are installation components that exploit technologies in keeping with an ecological sensibility. This show is a reflection of Enns' relationship with the cubs and her intimate understanding of their world. Enns' work is a juxtaposition of realism and abstraction that translates the grizzly cubs' interior landscapes and questions the exclusivity of "human" emotions.

Components of Through the Eyes of the Bear will travel first to Ljubljana, Sovenia at the Krka Gallery from March 22 to 29, 2000. Three days later, it will open at camac which is at the Centre d'art de Marnay outside of Paris, France and be on view April 1-9,2000. In September 2000, the travelling show continues to the Moscow Contemporary Art Centre where it is supported by the Canadian Embassy in Moscow.
